At the 2025 AMEA Conference, outstanding individuals were celebrated for their remarkable contributions to music education in Alabama. These awards recognize the dedication, leadership, and lasting impact of educators and administrators who inspire excellence in their students, colleagues, and communities. From advocating for music programs to fostering creativity and excellence in the classroom, these honorees exemplify the highest standards of our profession.
AMEA Hall of Fame
The AMEA Hall of Fame AMEA recognizes members for excellence in teaching or administration; contributions and improvements to the field of music education; betterment of our profession through exemplary service or acts; professional offices, professional publications, awards, or performances; and those with exceptional professional ideals and academic integrity.
Dr. Carl Hancock, Past President and Media Specialist of AMEA, was honored as the newest inductee into the AMEA Hall of Fame. A professor at The University of Alabama, Dr. Hancock has been recognized for his dedication to excellence in music education, innovative teaching methods, and leadership.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hancock has inspired countless students and educators, contributed impactful research and publications to the field, and served in numerous leadership roles within AMEA. His service includes roles as cNAfME Advisor, Research Chair, Webmaster, Media Specialist, and AMEA President. In 2019, he was awarded the AMEA Barbara Odom Distinguished Service Award.
Mr. John Baker, Past President of AMEA and esteemed choral director, has been inducted into the AMEA Hall of Fame. With a career spanning 30 years, Mr. Baker has profoundly influenced countless students through his dedication to music education and exemplary leadership.
Known for his passion, mentorship, and ability to inspire, Mr. Baker has nurtured the musical talents of his students while instilling values such as discipline, teamwork, and creativity. Former students, including Chris Duke, have credited his guidance with shaping their lives and setting them on paths to success.
Lacey Powell Outstanding Music Educators Award
Melissa McIntyre, music educator at Liberty Park Elementary School in the Vestavia Hills School System, has been awarded the prestigious Lacey Powell Outstanding Music Educator Award. This award recognizes educators who have set exceptional standards for the profession and demonstrated unwavering dedication to music education in Alabama.
Colleagues praise Melissa for her tireless work ethic, expertise in elementary music education, and advocacy for the arts. Faith Lenhart, Director of Arts Education for VHCS, described Melissa as a “teaching artist” and a lifelong learner who inspires excellence in her students and peers alike.
Outstanding Administrator Award
Christy Mims, Principal at Jemison Middle School in the Chilton County School District, has been honored with the 2025 AMEA Outstanding Administrator Award. This prestigious award recognizes administrators who demonstrate exceptional dedication and support for music education in Alabama.
Christy Mims has been celebrated for her commitment to fostering a thriving music program at Jemison Middle School, inspiring both educators and students through her actions and leadership.
