AMEA Announces Greg Gumina as New Executive Director

The Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Gregory L. Gumina as its new Executive Director, effective July 1, 2026.

Mr. Gumina brings a distinguished career in music education, organizational leadership, and dedicated service to the music education community in Alabama. With over three decades of experience as an educator, administrator, clinician, composer, and leader within AMEA and beyond, he is exceptionally qualified to guide the organization into its next chapter.

A Lifetime of Leadership in Music Education

Gumina currently serves as Supervisor of Instrumental Music Education and Theater for the Jefferson County Board of Education (2021–present), where he oversees directors across the district, manages budgeting and resources, coaches teachers, designs professional development, and ensures curriculum alignment with the Alabama Course of Study. He previously served as Assistant Band Director and Marching Band Coordinator/Director at Shades Valley High School for over two decades (1997–2020), building a highly successful program known for consistent superior ratings.

His leadership extends to higher education as well. Gumina has served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Alabama (2022–2024) and Miles College (2021–2023), mentoring intern teachers and teaching percussion pedagogy.

A proud alumnus of the University of Alabama (M.A. in Music Education, 1995) and West Virginia University (B.A. in Music with Business minor, 1991), Gumina is currently completing his doctoral studies in Global Leadership: Organizational Leadership and Administration at Troy University, with an anticipated dissertation completion date of December 2026.

Deep Roots in AMEA and Service to the Profession

Gumina has long been a pillar of AMEA. He served as President (2018–2020) and Immediate Past-President (2020–2022), and has contributed extensively through clinics, performances, and committee work. His service also includes the 2025 Alabama Course of Study State Textbook Adoption Committee and multiple curriculum and advisory roles in Jefferson County Schools.

As an active composer and arranger with nearly 60 published works across multiple ensembles, Gumina has had nine major works premiered at professional conferences. He has presented and performed at numerous state and national events, including the Alabama Music Educators Association In-Service Conference, Alabama Bandmasters Association, Percussive Arts Society events, and international leadership forums.

His many honors include induction into the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster Fraternity (2019) and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society (2021), the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association, and multiple awards for exceptional achievement with his ensembles.
