As I write my first President’s Message for Ala Breve, I am honored and humbled to serve the members of the Alabama Vocal Association. AVA has shaped my journey as a student, educator, Board member, and leader. I begin this term with gratitude for those who built this organization and with confidence in what we can accomplish together.
One priority of my presidency is the development of active committees within every AVA district. Too much important work can fall on too few shoulders. District committees can support advocacy, mentorship, professional development, hospitality, communication, technology, event preparation, and student recognition while also developing future leaders.
This is my call to arms: become involved. AVA needs veteran directors willing to share wisdom, early-career teachers bringing new perspectives, and members from programs of every size and setting. Leadership does not begin with a title. It begins with a willingness to serve, listen, and complete necessary work with excellence. When your District Chair asks for help, answer the call. Better still, volunteer before being asked.
As I consider the leadership our profession requires, I reflect on the passing of one of my mentors, Dr. Gary Packwood. His influence reached far beyond the rehearsal room. He possessed a deep passion for choral music and an unwavering belief in the value of music education. He challenged students and colleagues to pursue excellence, but he also understood that excellence must be protected through courageous advocacy.
Dr. Packwood was a warrior for music education. He did not treat advocacy as a slogan reserved for conferences or social media posts. He spoke, acted, challenged, and stood firmly when music and students needed a champion. His example reminds us that strong programs do not survive by accident. They endure because educators are willing to defend opportunities, build relationships, and speak clearly about the indispensable role of the arts in a complete education.
We honor his legacy when we teach with excellence, advocate with courage, and prepare others to lead after us.
Summer Board Meeting
Our 2026 Summer Board Meeting was held June 14–17 at Hartselle High School. The Board examined teacher feedback, reviewed policies and handbooks, evaluated All-State and SCPA procedures, approved repertoire, and planned the year ahead. Our conversations were thoughtful, honest, and centered on serving Alabama’s teachers and students. I am grateful to every Board member who gave time, experience, and careful attention to this work.

Fall Workshop
I invite you to join us for the AVA Fall Workshop on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Our clinician, Stephanie Smeltzer of Providence Day School, will lead three sessions designed to strengthen and inspire our classroom practice. The workshop will also include guidance and resources concerning the sight-singing component being introduced during All-State Auditions. We heard the concerns raised by teachers regarding access, preparation, and student anxiety, and we are committed to providing clear expectations and practical support.
All-State Auditions
All-State Auditions will begin October 29 and continue through November 6 at sites across the state. Please review the published route, registration procedures, audition requirements, and sight-singing materials carefully. The All-State Festival remains one of AVA’s most meaningful educational experiences, and the preparation begins long before students enter the audition room. Additional festival information will be available on the AVA website.
2027 All-State Festival
Last year, we returned to Samford University for the festival. The feedback was mostly positive, so we look forward to returning to Samford from March 11-13 for the 2027 Festival. The 2027 All-State clinicians are:
