Sharon August – 2019

Sharon McCann August is a retired music teacher of Vestavia Hills Elementary at Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills, AL.  Her other teaching experiences were at Highlands School in Mountain Brook and Berry Middle School in Hoover.  She is a native of Mobile, AL, where she played French Horn with the Mobile Youth Orchestra and the Mobile Symphony Orchestra.  Sharon received a bachelor’s degree in music performance and a master’s degree in music education from the University of Montevallo.  She completed Level I Orff certification under Shirley McRae, and Levels II, III, and Master’s Level at The University of Memphis under Konnie Saliba and Jos Wuytack.  Sharon was selected as Alabama Teacher of the Year at Liberty Park Elementary in 2007, and received her National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification in early and middle childhood music in 2007. She continues to mentor other teachers in the National Board process, as well as being a mentor and cooperating teacher to more than 20 student interns during her teaching career.

Sharon served as president of elementary division of AMEA from 2009 to 2010She was an active member in the Alabama Orff Schulwerk Association, serving as president of the Alabama chapter from 2002 to 2005, and was elected as the southeast regional representative to the National Board of Trustees of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association from 2007-10.  While teaching, Sharon played horn with the Birmingham Community Band and Celebration Winds, and is now a member of Callanwolde Community Band in Decatur, GA.  Sharon has one son and two daughters.  Since retiring, Sharon has moved to Atlanta, GA, to enjoy her four grandchildren!
